TWENTY-SIX

By the time Colin arrived at the scene, Ren had established the perimeter of what they were calling a crime scene until they could prove otherwise. Better safe than sorry.

Roger Willis lived in Citrus Heights, but his body was found in Sacramento County, thus giving the SPD jurisdiction. Uniformed officers were stationed outside the crime scene, keeping the media and onlookers from entering the area.

Roger Willis’s body had been taken down and was now lying faceup on a tarp. A photographer set up his camera on a tripod and adjusted his flash before each picture, taking images from all angles. Once that was done, the medical examiner could inspect the body and give Colin her opinion as to the cause of death.

There were two witnesses, both of whom said they saw a man walking away from the area where Roger was found.

Ren had kept the witnesses separated until Colin arrived. It was best to keep them apart and to talk to each one individually so they didn’t feed off each other. Witness number one was a young man, late twenties, out for a run. He didn’t have much to say to Colin about the person he’d seen leaving the area, other than “Big shoulders. Didn’t see his face. Heavy, dark jacket.” The rest of Colin’s questions were answered with yes, no, maybe.

Standing in front of Colin was witness number two, a homeless woman. Even with the thick, dirty wool blanket draped over her shoulders, she looked frail. Her naturally curly hair was a mixture of brown and silver. Her skin was leathery from time spent outside. She described the man she’d seen leaving the area as white, tall, and dark-haired. Had she been slightly intoxicated, his chance of getting a truthful account would have been higher. It was a known fact that intoxicated witnesses talked freely and were usually truthful.

Unfortunately, witness number two had dilated pupils and rapid eye movement, and she kept picking at her hair. Colin’s guess would be that she was a meth user. And that would mean she probably wasn’t a reliable eyewitness. But she was one of only two witnesses at the moment, and therefore he wanted to hear what she had to say.

“How tall would you guess the man was?” Colin asked.

“The man walking away or the dead man?” She used her right hand to slap her left arm as if swatting a mosquito.

“The man walking away,” Colin said patiently.

“About as tall as you, maybe.” She put a hand to her chin and looked toward the sky. “Maybe he was taller than you, after all. I think he was Latino. Do you have anything to eat with you? Any candy?”

“No. Sorry. Do you recall what the man walking away was wearing?”

She scratched her neck, her fingernails leaving red lines across her flesh. “Dark pants, maybe jeans, and a coat! A thick coat. Puffy and warm-looking.” She pulled her blanket tighter around her shoulders and shivered. “Do you want to know what color it was?”

“That would be good.
